What happens if I'm late paying a company tax?

When a tax is late, the amount goes up. Interest and a late penalty are added. If it goes unpaid for too long, the debt is moved to Active Debt (Dívida Ativa) and can turn into a court collection. This also blocks your clearance certificate, the document that proves you are up to date. Without it, you can't close certain contracts. It's best to get back in order quickly.
